The Polymer Engineering Group of ICTP was created in the late eighties, in the midst of the global environmental crisis and the role of plastic materials in the context of the economic, industrial, social and political sectors, from whose interactions derives the complexity that characterizes the binomial materials and economy. The extreme versatility of materials based in whole or in part on organic polymers explains why the research activity of the already consolidated GIP from the nineties onwards was configured under the heading of heterogeneous materials based on polymers. The GIP, committed to the Principles of Sustainable Development (Ecobalance), raised its research activity according to a double aspect: Academic and Applied, as a consequence of the difficulties of scaling operations in polymer engineering, due to the binomial processing/properties characteristic of the aforementioned materials. In the absence of full control over the nanometric domain of those interfaces, the GIP maintains a Top-Down approach, applying advanced statistical techniques of quantitative research and statistical design of experiments to analytical techniques and simulation tools, both of processes and of increasingly powerful macromolecular domains, to correlate the emerging morphologies of the real-time processing operations of the aforementioned materials, with their properties.
